Merhaba my dears, good morning! :-)
It’s my last few hours in Istanbul before I head to the airport to fly to Cairo. I can’t believe how quickly my month flew by. I wished I had had more time to blog but Istanbul is a city that needs to be lived.
I completely immersed myself in Turkish culture, including watching Turkish TV series on Netflix. :D One I couldn’t recommend more is “Another Self.” It’s incredibly moving and right up my alley, dealing with themes of generational healing and strong female friendships.
Istanbul by sunrise
As a socially awkward introvert who hates crowds and noise, my favourite way to explore Istanbul was in the early mornings, during sunrise, when I could roam the streets on my own and absorb the city's sunrise magic. I will go so far as to say there’s no other city in the world that is more magical during sunrise (or sunset) than Istanbul.
There was this cute dog in the old town who brought me to Blue Mosque, waited there for me while I was praying, and then brought me to Hagia Sophia. :-)
Participating in a live Muslim Prayer at Blue Mosque
Foreigners aren’t allowed into the mosque during prayer times. I was standing in its beautiful square with a headscarf on when a bunch of Muslim women came for prayer, saw me, smiled at me, and gestured for me to join them. Of course I took this opportunity and entered the mosque at 6:40 am with them. We all built a line and I prayed like they did, lowering my head to the ground, just like they did. At times tears ran down my face because I felt so overwhelmed by the beauty of the mosque, the chants for prayer, and the kindness of the Muslim women who invited me to join.
I prayed for humanity, for peace, and more peace, for the genocide in Gaza to end, and for a Palestine free of apartheid and occupation.
Of course I visited many more mosques, my favourite one being Ortakoy mosque as previously mentioned in another blog post due to past life memories.
Topkapi palace
Another place filled with past life memories of having been one of the Sultans’s daughters. Another life where I was a black slave and one as a writer of scriptures, some form of Ottoman empire historian. The palace and its harem are stunningly beautiful.
Honestly, my words on here don’t do Istanbul justice, I know that! I am finishing this blog at the airport knowing there’s so much more to say. So much more to share. On my way here I nearly sobbed in the taxi when we drove over the Bosphorus bridge and I saw the old city in the distance with its mosques, and the Marmaran Sea filled with sailing boats. I knew then my love affair with Istanbul wasn’t over yet and that I will be back!
Next time you hear from me will be from Egypt. :-)
